The Dashcam Discrepancy: Did Alec Baldwin Lie About the ‘Whale-Sized’ Truck That Caused His Crash?

Date:

It was a dramatic escape that sounded like a moment right out of a Hollywood movie: actor Alec Baldwin swerving to avoid a monster “whale-sized” truck to save himself and his brother Stephen Baldwin before smashing his wife’s Range Rover into a “big, fat tree” in East Hampton.

But now, newly released video footage threatens to turn Baldwin’s dramatic account into a classic celebrity contradiction.

The controversy centers on a dashcam video, first obtained by Newsmax, captured from the very commercial vehicle Baldwin, 67, blamed for the Monday, October 13 collision.

The Tale of the Tape vs. Baldwin’s Claim

In a video posted to his Instagram, the 30 Rock star vividly recounted the incident:

“A guy cut me off in a truck, a big garbage truck the size of a whale. To avoid hitting him, I hit a tree.”

However, the dashcam footage from the National Waste Services truck appears to show a vastly different sequence of events. Instead of cutting Baldwin off, the truck is seen slowly moving toward the right side of the road, potentially onto the shoulder, just moments before Baldwin’s white SUV speeds past on the right and collides violently with a tree.

The stark visual evidence has led Newsmax and others to assert the video “contradicts” the actor’s explanation.

The Police Report Holds the Line

What makes this development truly fascinating is that the official narrative initially sided with the actor. The police report, as previously reported, backed Baldwin’s version:

“A white 2023 Range Rover, operated by Alec Baldwin, with passenger Stephen Baldwin, was found to have struck a tree on the Eastbound shoulder of the roadway while avoiding the turning action of a 2020 Mack commercial truck…”

This official record supports Baldwin’s claim that he was avoiding the truck’s maneuver.

When confronted with the new video, however, the East Hampton Police Department showed no sign of retracting their findings. A spokesman told the Daily Mail: “This video is not from our department. Our report stands as accurate and nothing Mr Baldwin has stated publicly since impacted the responding officer’s report.”

For now, the official police record stands firm, even as a highly circulated piece of video evidence tells the public an entirely different story. The incident adds another layer of scrutiny for the actor, who has been under intense media pressure following the fatal 2021 Rust shooting incident.
